Your First Trip Together: 11 Honeymoon Destinations That Are Perfect Icebreakers After an Arranged Marriage

By Shivani Raghuvanshi, Co-Founder, Tour to Dreams

In India, we talk a lot about love marriages versus arranged marriages, but there’s one thing both eventually have in common you have to get to know the person you’re going to spend your life with and honestly, I think travelling together can be one of the fastest ways to do that.

Imagine this: you’ve just gotten married. You’ve met each other a handful of times, had conversations with your families around, discussed careers, future plans, maybe even your favourite food and hobbies. Everyone thinks they know you two are a great match.

And then suddenly, you’re sitting next to each other on a flight or train, heading towards your honeymoon destination. Honestly, I think that’s one of the most interesting parts of an arranged marriage. You’re entering a marriage with someone you are still getting to know. And your honeymoon can actually become your first real opportunity to spend uninterrupted time together. No relatives. No wedding functions. No friends dropping by. No one asking you to pose for another photograph. Just the two of you.

And that’s why I don’t think your first honeymoon needs to be about ticking off the most luxurious destination. It should be somewhere that gives you time to relax, talk, laugh, get a little lost and discover how you actually are together.

Here are the destinations I’d personally consider for that first trip.

Jaisalmer – For a Honeymoon That Feels Like a Story

If I had to pick one destination for a couple that wants something a little different, Jaisalmer would be high on my list. There is something incredibly romantic about the Golden City. The old havelis, yellow sandstone streets, the fort glowing in the evening light and then suddenly leaving the city behind for the Thar Desert.

A desert sunset together, followed by dinner under the stars and a night at a desert camp can make for a pretty unforgettable first trip. But what I really like about Jaisalmer is that it gives you things to do without making the trip exhausting. You can explore the fort and old city during the day, slow down in the evening and then spend a night in the desert.

And somewhere between sitting on a camel, arguing about who got the better photograph and staring at the stars, you might actually forget that you were strangers not too long ago.

Goa – For Couples Who Want to Keep It Fun

Goa is probably the easiest honeymoon recommendation because there is no pressure to have a perfectly planned honeymoon here. You can sleep late, have breakfast together, rent a scooter, explore beaches, find a café, watch the sunset and decide what you want to do next. And I actually think that’s perfect for a newly married couple.

You don’t know each other’s travel habits yet. Maybe one of you wants to explore everything and the other wants to spend half the day at the beach. Goa gives you room for both. And if you’re working with a reasonable budget, you don’t have to turn your honeymoon into an expensive luxury holiday. A comfortable stay, good food and a few experiences can be enough.

Sometimes your first trip together should simply be fun.

Kerala – For Couples Who Want to Slow Down

If Goa feels too energetic and you want something more peaceful, I’d choose Kerala. A few days around Munnar, followed by Alleppey and a night on a houseboat, can make for a beautiful honeymoon without having to constantly move from one attraction to another.

The tea plantations, misty hills, greenery and backwaters naturally create a slower atmosphere and that’s exactly what I like about Kerala for a newly married couple. You can actually talk. You can sit outside on the houseboat in the evening and just watch the water go by. Maybe that’s when you have your first proper conversation about what you both want from your new life together.

Andaman – When You Want Your Own Little World

If you’re dreaming about a proper tropical honeymoon, Andaman is hard to ignore. Beautiful beaches, clear water, island sunsets and enough activities to keep things exciting without making the trip hectic. You can spend one day exploring, another trying water sports and another doing absolutely nothing. And honestly, that balance is perfect. Because after a huge wedding, sometimes you don’t want another schedule. You just want to disappear somewhere beautiful with the person you married.

I’d recommend spending some time around Port Blair/Sri Vijaya Puram, but the real honeymoon experience begins when you head towards Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island). This is where I’d want to spend the majority of my time. The island has beautiful beaches, lush greenery and a much more relaxed atmosphere. Radhanagar Beach is the obvious highlight, especially around sunset, when the sky starts changing colours and you realise why this place is considered one of India’s most beautiful beaches.

Kashmir – For the Couple Who Wants a Postcard Honeymoon

Kashmir is one of those destinations where you can look around and think, “How is this real?” The mountains, lakes, valleys and changing landscapes make almost every day feel special. A shikara ride on Dal Lake, exploring Srinagar, visiting Gulmarg or spending time in Pahalgam can give you a mix of romance and adventure.

And Kashmir works especially well if both of you love scenic destinations. Just don’t try to squeeze the entire valley into a few days. Your honeymoon is not a sightseeing competition. Give yourselves time to sit somewhere beautiful, have a conversation and actually enjoy being there.

Gangtok – For the Couple Who Wants Mountains Without the Usual Crowd

Gangtok is one of those places I think more couples should consider. It’s beautiful, peaceful and has a completely different character from the usual Himachal honeymoon. You can explore the city, visit monasteries, drive through the mountains, enjoy local food and take in those incredible Himalayan views. And if you have more time, you can explore places around Sikkim depending on the season and road conditions.

For me, Gangtok works because it gives you that mountain honeymoon feeling without making the entire trip about adventure. It’s comfortable, scenic and slow enough to actually enjoy together.

Coorg – For the Couple Who Wants a Quiet Escape

If both of you would rather wake up surrounded by greenery than snow, Coorg is a beautiful choice. Coffee plantations, misty mornings, waterfalls and beautiful homestays make it perfect for couples who want to escape the noise and you don’t need a packed itinerary.

Wake up. Have breakfast. Go for a drive. Visit a plantation. Find a beautiful café. Come back and relax. Repeat. Sometimes that’s all you need. Coorg is especially good if you want a honeymoon that feels intimate rather than extravagant.

Darjeeling – For Old-School Romance

There’s something timeless about Darjeeling. The toy train, colonial architecture, tea gardens, mountain views and those cold mornings give it a very different feeling. Wake up early for a sunrise over Kanchenjunga, walk through the town, drink chai, explore the tea estates and spend your evening somewhere warm.

It has that old-school romance that doesn’t need too much effort and if you and your partner are the kind of people who would rather sit with a cup of tea and talk than spend the entire day doing activities, Darjeeling could be perfect.

Mussoorie – For a Short & Easy Honeymoon

Not every honeymoon needs to be a week-long international-style vacation. Sometimes you just want to get away for three or four days. That’s where Mussoorie works beautifully. t’s easy to reach, has plenty of comfortable stays, beautiful mountain views and enough cafés and places to explore without making the trip exhausting.

You can walk around Mall Road, visit viewpoints, explore Landour and find a quiet café together.

And because you don’t have to spend an entire day travelling to get there, you have more time to actually enjoy your honeymoon.

Pondicherry – For a Slow, Pretty Coastal Escape

If you’re looking for something different from Goa, I’d definitely consider Pondicherry.

The French-inspired streets, cafés, seaside promenade and relaxed atmosphere make it a lovely destination for couples. You can spend the morning exploring the White Town area, have a long lunch, walk along the promenade in the evening and simply take your time.

It doesn’t feel like a typical beach holiday. It feels more like a slow European-style escape in India and that’s exactly what makes it interesting for a first honeymoon.

Nainital – For a Classic Mountain Honeymoon

And then there’s Nainital the classic choice that still works. A beautiful lake surrounded by mountains, cosy cafés, walks, viewpoints and comfortable stays make it a relatively easy destination for a first couple trip.

You can take a boat ride on Naini Lake, explore the Mall Road, visit nearby viewpoints and spend your evenings simply enjoying the weather.

It’s not trying too hard to be romantic. It just naturally is And if this is your first trip together, sometimes simple is better.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

Here’s What I Really Think

If you’re going on a honeymoon after an arranged marriage, don’t put too much pressure on yourselves to make it the “perfect honeymoon.”

You don’t need to come back with a hundred romantic photographs. You don’t need an expensive resort and you definitely don’t need to pretend that you already know everything about each other.

You’re still learning. Maybe one of you will discover that the other snores. Maybe you’ll argue about where to eat. Maybe you’ll get lost. Maybe one of you will get irritated because the other takes 45 minutes to get ready and maybe, somewhere in between all of that, you’ll laugh so hard that you’ll forget you were ever nervous about this whole arranged-marriage thing.

That’s the real purpose of the first trip.

It’s an icebreaker. It’s your first little adventure as a married couple. The first time you get to experience a new place while also experiencing each other. Because an arranged marriage doesn’t mean you have to know everything about your partner on day one.

Sometimes, you get to fall in love slowly and maybe your honeymoon is where that story really begins.

Two people. One suitcase. A new place. And a whole lot of getting to know each other.
