Why a Customised Itinerary Can Make Your Trip So Much Better
By Shivani Raghuvanshi, Co-Founder, Tour to Dreams
One thing I’ve realised after being on both sides of travel as a traveller and now as someone who plans trips for other people is that there is no such thing as one perfect itinerary for everyone. Two people can visit the same destination and want completely different experiences.
One person wants to wake up at 6 AM and chase every sunrise. Another wants to sleep in, have a slow breakfast and explore only a few places. One group wants adventure. Another wants comfortable hotels and relaxed sightseeing. Someone wants to spend more money on experiences and save on accommodation. Someone else wants the best stay possible. So why should both travellers get the exact same itinerary?
They shouldn’t. That’s exactly why I believe in customised itineraries. Your Trip Should Feel Like Your Trip. Think about the last time you booked a holiday package. You probably got a list that looked something like:
Day 1 – Arrival
Day 2 – Sightseeing
Day 3 – Sightseeing
Day 4 – Departure
Everything is already decided. The hotel. The restaurant. The sightseeing spots. The timing. Sometimes even how long you’re allowed to spend at a place. It might be convenient, but there’s one problem. It isn’t necessarily your trip.
A customised itinerary starts with a completely different question:
“What do YOU want from this holiday?” That’s the question I believe should come before anything else. Tell Us How You Like to Travel When someone approaches us at Tour to Dreams, I don’t want to immediately send them a package PDF. I want to know about the traveller first. Who are you travelling with? What’s your budget?nHow many days do you have? Do you want adventure or relaxation? Do you prefer hotels or homestays? Are you okay with long road journeys? Do you want to explore local food? Are you interested in photography? Do you want nightlife? Do you want temples and spirituality? Or do you simply want to sit somewhere beautiful and do absolutely nothing?
These answers completely change the itinerary and that’s what makes customisation so valuable. You Don’t Have to See Everything This is something I genuinely believe in. A good itinerary isn’t the one that covers the maximum number of places. It’s the one that gives you enough time to actually enjoy the places you visit.
I’ve seen itineraries where travellers are expected to visit five places in one day. On paper, it looks impressive. In reality? You’re constantly getting into the car, getting out of the car, taking one picture and moving to the next location. By the end of the day, you’re exhausted and you barely remember what you saw. With a customised itinerary, we can say: Let’s remove two places. Let’s spend more time at the ones you actually care about. Maybe you’d rather spend an entire afternoon around the ghats in Varanasi instead of rushing through six attractions. Maybe you want an extra night in Manali. Maybe you want to spend two nights in a beautiful Himalayan village instead of changing hotels every day. That’s the freedom customisation gives you.
Your Budget Should Decide the Trip Not the Other Way Around. One of my favourite things about customised travel is that we can start with a real budget.
Let’s say you tell us:
“I have ₹15,000 per person.” That doesn’t mean we simply find a ₹15,000 package. We look at what matters to you.
If you’re travelling with friends, perhaps we save money on accommodation by sharing rooms and use that money for an experience. If you’re a couple, maybe you want to spend a little more on a beautiful stay and save elsewhere. If you’re travelling with your parents, you may prefer a comfortable vehicle even if it costs slightly more.
The destination doesn’t change. The way you experience it does. Customised Doesn’t Mean Complicated I think people sometimes hear the word customised and assume it means expensive luxury travel. It doesn’t. Customisation can be incredibly simple.
And Then There Are Destinations Where Customisation Really Matters.
When you’re travelling somewhere like Ladakh, Spiti, Kashmir, Himachal or even a multi-city spiritual trip, planning becomes much more complicated. Distances are larger than they appear on a map. Road conditions matter. Altitude matters. Weather matters. Hotel locations matter and sometimes a route that looks perfect online simply doesn’t make sense in reality.
This is where having someone who understands the destination can save you from making expensive or frustrating mistakes.
For example, if you’re planning a Spiti trip, you might look at a map and think, “I’ll cover this place today and that place tomorrow.” But someone who has actually planned the route will look at the road conditions, altitude, travel time and available accommodation and tell you, “Don’t do that. You’ll spend the entire day in the car.”
That’s the kind of value I think a travel company should provide. Not just bookings. Experience. You Can Also Build in Free Time This is one of my favourite parts of a customised itinerary. I don’t believe every hour of your holiday needs to be planned. In fact, some of my favourite travel memories have happened when there was nothing planned. A free evening in a mountain town. A morning spent drinking chai. An afternoon exploring a market without a destination. Sitting beside a river. Getting lost in the lanes of an old city.
With a customised itinerary, you can deliberately leave space for those moments. Because sometimes the best part of a trip is the thing you didn’t plan.
What We Try to Do at Tour to Dreams
For me, customised travel isn’t about making a fancy itinerary PDF. It’s about listening.
You tell us, “This is where I want to go. This is my budget. These are the people I’m travelling with. This is what I want to experience.”
And then we work backwards.
Where should you stay? How should you travel? What should you skip?Where should you spend more time? What can we do within your budget? Where should we keep a buffer? What would make the trip easier? That’s where our experience as travellers becomes useful.
Because we aren’t just looking at a map. We’ve been travellers too. We know what it’s like to be exhausted after a 10-hour road journey. We know that sometimes the hotel that looks perfect online isn’t worth it. We know that a two-hour buffer can save an entire day and we know that sometimes you just need an evening where nobody tells you where to be.
So, Should You Get a Customised Itinerary?
If you’re someone who wants your holiday to feel personal rather than packaged, I’d say yes.
Especially if:
You have a specific budget.
You’re travelling with a group.
You have specific interests.
You don’t want rushed sightseeing.
You want flexibility.
You’re travelling somewhere logistically complicated.
You want to choose your own hotels.
You want a mix of planned experiences and free time.
You don’t have to fit into someone else’s itinerary.
The itinerary should fit around you.
Your Dream Trip Doesn’t Have to Look Like Everyone Else’s. I think this is the biggest reason I love customised travel. You bring the dream. We customise the journey.
